The whole wedding and reception had been magical. His friends and employees and his scattering of cousins had embraced me, welcomed me. It felt good. I knew it was only a marriage of convenience, but they didn’t, and they treated me like I was the woman who’d made their solitary, hard-working boss and friend happy at long last. Even the housekeeper had pulled me aside, squeezed my hands and said, “I’m so glad to see that boy happy. He has been lonely too long.” I had hugged her and beamed.

Having him at my side, his ring on my finger was a new, incandescent joy. His arm felt perfect around my waist—although the corset boning in my gorgeous lace dress was like being suffocated by a too-small cage. When we danced, I felt like he was holding me up, like I was floating. I knew my feet touched the ground, but he moved me so smoothly, leading me masterfully through the slow dance. It was effortless to surrender myself to his arms, to his will. I looked forward to surrendering to his will in other things as well. The thought made me blush, made him kiss me too long on the dance floor.

The next morning, waking up with Raul was a new level of happiness. I stretched, smiling like a cat. The sunbeams peeked between curtains and I sat up. I was a little sore from the long night of loving he had promised and delivered and started to get up to take a shower when a strong arm snaked out from beneath the sheets and captured me by the waist.

“Where do you think you’re going this fine morning, Mrs. Santiago?” he asked.

“Mmmm. I like the sound of that. I’m going to shower. I’ll be out in a few minutes.”

“Okay, but I let you go under protest,” he grumbled.

I gave him a quick kiss and hurried to the bathroom before I could lose my nerve.

After I was cleaned up and my wet hair combed and pulled back, I came out in his robe. The sleeves were way too long, but it was cozy. He waited for me in bed. I felt my knees and resolve go weak. I crawled over the mattress to join him. He pulled me into his arms, kissed me languorously, and hugged me to his chest.

We lay there in the quiet for a few minutes. I relaxed in his muscular embrace and drifted back off to sleep. When I woke, he was kissing me and we made love again before I got up to get breakfast.

“I was going to make you pancakes,” I protested with a laugh, “so much for bringing you breakfast in bed.”

“I’d rather have you in bed. We can skip breakfast,” he said.

“No way. I’m starving. Besides, we’ve worked up an appetite.”

Eventually I made it downstairs and started toasting a bagel. I was too relaxed and loose limbed to cook anything more complicated. I just wanted to drink my juice and stare moodily around me.
